Is it me, or do we care more about sports then we do our country as a whole?
Are many of you aware of the 'minor' controversy going on right now in the NBA in regards to their upcoming All-Star game? Well let me tell you the readers digest version. There are many people within the sport who are upset at the fact that the fans (thats you and me) are voting for certain players who either have hardly played this year (Tracy Mcgrady), or are not playing well enough in the minds of some (Allen Iverson) to deserve the right to be in the game. But nonetheless, they will be in the game because the people have spoken. Anyway, this got me thinking.............. We sure seem to fight for our favorite teams and players in sports, but when it comes to fighting for what is right in the world, and what should be happening in government................not so much................
What is it about sports that makes us so passionate, so motivated, so emotional, and so supportive of others and what they represent? I ask because I wonder why we never seem to put as much effort into things that may be more important, like our jobs, our politicians, our housing, and our economy. Think of it in a different way. Has anyone noticed that certain teams seem to be playing in very old stadiums, with limited seating, luxury boxes, etc.? Ever wonder why? Well here is my opinion. When it comes down to the owners of many of these teams asking the city and its people to pay more taxes and help pay for improvements to these stadiums, the people all of sudden seem to "rise up". In other words, it seems to be the people who understand that they have control over the situation, and fight for what they feel is right in deciding what is best for their city. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. How come we never take that stand with our government?
How is it that we can fill the new Texas Stadium with over 100,000 on any given Sunday, but we can't seem to get more then like 50 people to show up at a local town hall meeting...........where they are discussing things that effect our health, economy, housing, and future????????????????????
Oh well, what do I know. Its football playoff time, and the hardcore fans are out in full force, screaming and yelling in support of their team. They are defending their quarterback, seeing signs of a great future with their young talent, and all the while demanding so much of these players, coaches and owners to play hurt, win games, and spend as much money as possible to put out the best product that they can to represent them............................hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......
