SUPERBOWL !!! Time for advertisers to overspend for commercial spots.
So I read a few articles recently which stated that advertisers paid anywhere from $2.5 million to $3 million dollars for a 30 second commercial, of which many of us saw during today's super bowl between the Colts and Saints. Ok, first of all, has anyone else noticed that the "superbowl" commercials are just not as good as they used to be? (This includes the lame a$$ remake of the Mcdonalds commercial that was great back in the day when Larry Bird and MJ were in it) Now, has anyone else noticed that the prices for these spots continue to rise, even in a down economy. I bring this up for many different reasons. One of which has to do with my overall fascination with advertising in general. I can't tell you how many times I saw a real sh*tty commercial and wondered what the hell these companies were thinking. Then comes what many would consider the biggest and most important 4 hours of commercial time all year long. And what did we get out of it? A cute commercial about a kid slapping his mom's date, and Betty White.
Well, here is another thought I have. I would like everyone right now to think about their favorite commercials........................ok................now............tell me what product they were selling? Oh............you don't remember............neither do I.............I never really do.
Although, to be honest with you, I really don't watch commercials anymore anyway (thank god for TIVO and/or the DVR) But anyway, why did we create such a great demand for this in the first place? Obviously, I understand the point that companies like the opportunity to reach millions of people at one time and play the numbers game as far as how many out of those people will actually follow up and purchase whatever it is they are selling. But honestly, is it worth the $3 million dollar gamble? Maybe it is. The powers that be over at godaddy.com believe that a super bowl ad back in the day helped to create the multi million dollar that it is today. But I just can't help but feel that for every godaddy.com, there are 10 other companies whose commercials (good or bad) are either completely forgotten or loved by millions, but also couldn't match the ad with the product if you had a gun to their head.
As always, I wonder why we put so much time, effort and money into certain things in life And I will never truly understand how an entire group of people at a company can spend $3 millions for something that looks horrible, unfunny and not entertaining. There has to be more creative people out their in this wonderful country of ours.
And it's amazing just how popular, important, and significant football seems to be in this country...............to my fellow citizens.........to our "creative juices"............and to our economy..............
