So what is it to truly have an addiction? And where does it come from?
Whether it be drugs/alcohol, cigarettes, money or (the new hot craze of the times) sex, it seems as though each and every one of us has some form of addiction. What is this thing called 'addiction' and what does it bring out in us?I was talking with a good friend of mine last night about the thought of substance use, what causes people to abuse various drugs, and what it does for them. His ideas centered around the thought that many people, while on drugs for example, become more in tune with their true emotions, and express themselves for who they truly are, and are not always completely out of character while under the influence. What he means is: if you are, by nature, an angry person, then you will most likely be an angry drunk. If you are a sad/depressed kind of person, then you will be a sad drunk. And so on and so on. Maybe one's addiction is truly a reflection of who they are in some way, shape or form.
But I guess another big question should be this: What is it that many of us are seeking through our addictions? Are we seeking comfort? Are we seeking pleasure? Or, most importantly, are we seeking happiness? to me, happiness is the key. Go ask a random mother/father what they think of their child getting married. More then likely, they will state that they just hope their child is happy. When it comes time for many parents to talk with and guide their children in determining their future, these parents most likely will tell that child to be, first and foremost, happy with their lives, both professionally and socially. So then, the next question becomes this: Why do those, for example, down on their luck, continue to gamble when they seem to always lose in the end? What causes someone making $30k a year to go to Vegas and place $10k in wages on the superbowl? What makes someone commit millions of dollars into the stock market, real estate and business industry? Is it all about finding happiness. Is it about finding that 'runners high'? Or is all about just getting 'high' to take the pains away? Our emotions always seem to rule our lives, cloud our judgment, and make many decisions for us time after time. I guess all I wanna know is, what are you getting from your addiction? And what are you seeking through this addiction? And last, but not least, do you truly wish to no longer have this addiction? Because, let's face it, many a millionaire started out as just a poor schmuck like you and me. But they made it their passion, their motivation, and their "addiction" to succeed, and it lead them to the promised land.............hmmmmmmmmmm......
Most Excellent...So, if we quit our habit, what does that then make us?
