What ever happened to being original?

Remember when you used to go out on a Friday night and see a "new" movie that was playing in the theater? Remember when that movie was actually "new", AKA a movie you haven't already seen before.  Well...........ladies and gentlemen...........please race out and see that "new" movie called 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'.  Oh....wait a minute.....where have I heard that title before.....that's right......Fuckin movie was already made over 25 years ago ! It seems like one in every 10 movies made lately is actually a movie that hasn't already been made before.
I guess I'm bringing this up because I now live in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area, and I am constantly surrounded by struggling actors, directors and writers.  And they all have something particular in common.  They all have scripts, or have acted in short/independent films that are actually ORIGINAL, you know, stuff that hasn't been remade or made into a sequel.  And I am wondering why (besides the obvious reason of money) nobody big in the film industry is financing any of these 'original' projects.
In the end, I believe that I have no reason to blame big business, AKA the Film industry.  As usual, I blame us, society, for letting this happen day after day.  We apparently (based on ticket sales and TV viewer ratings) haven told big business that they have complete control over what they feel we should be entertained by, and we will support anything they put out, even if it has already been put out before.
I'm not really upset with the 3D and kids movie boom of late, because I have long given up on the fight to figure out why parents let commercials decide what they have to buy their kids and what movies they are apparently forced to take their kids to see.  But I guess I feel like we still have a chance to try and get back some kind of power here as a public to start making the Film Industry go back to being original.
We are still in a down economy anyway, and I think its kinda funny that, despite all the financial heartache, we seem to be fully supporting the film industry in their efforts to save time, effort and money by simply remaking everything.....Wow......I kinda wish we all supported each other like that in every day life.
