You learn something new every day. Even at a comedy club.
So I performed stand-up comedy again last night. As always, I had a blast. Started out nervous, remained nervous, then got on stage and lit up the joint (at least, I think I did ok).
It was, first and foremost, and amazing 'experience' for me. I've decided to make that the word for the day. Mainly because, right when the night was going to end, there was a surprise "celebrity guest" who appeared at the club I was performing at. It was Marlon Wayans, one of the amazingly talented family of entertainers. But, amongst all the comedy and jokes, he also spoke of something profound, important, and worth hearing among all else.
Basically, it was about living life by our experiences, and not always trying to "literally" record/document everything we do, while it is happening, with one example being spending an entire night videotaping a concert you are actually attending live and in person.
This statement seemed so obvious, but at the same time, made all the sense in the world, and seems to apparently be so hard to accomplish in our lives. In this day and age of facebook, twitter, and digital cameras, it has become the norm to document everything we experience in our entire lives, and share these experiences with pretty much anyone willing to see it.
But, you know what, Marlon was right. First of all, to use him as an example, I could have easily took out my fancy Android phone and recorded Marlon's entire performance on stage, and later shared it with people via email, facebook, and youtube........But then what? What purpose would it serve? If it were me getting this "bootleg" copy of the performance, I, like most of you, probably would have felt more jealous then entertained. I would have been jealous because I would have wished I was actually there that night, living the "experience" first hand.
Besides, If I wanted to see something that was previously recorded/made, I would rather pay a few bucks and go see it in a movie theater on a big ass screen, and not just some 15inch computer screen (that's what porn watching is for)
So here's to you Marlon. Thank you for an amazing life experience I will never forget.
